What happened
A flaw has been identified in the m17n-lib library, which affects multiple versions of Red Hat Enterprise Linux, including versions 6 through 10. The vulnerability (CVE-2026-109854) allows an attacker who has local access to an affected system to cause the library to read uninitialized memory from the stack by supplying crafted input to an application processing ISO-2022 encoded text. This can result in unexpected behaviour within the application, as well as limited information disclosure. The flaw is classified as low severity, primarily due to the limited impact and absence of any known exploitation or remote control capabilities. It requires user interaction, such as opening a file or visiting a page, and assumes the attacker already has local access to the host.
Who is affected
Organisations running affected implementations of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6, 7, 8, 9, or 10 that utilise the m17n-lib library are impacted by this vulnerability. Since the flaw depends on local access and user interaction, its immediate exploitation relies on existing access to the system. No remote attack vectors have been identified, and the vulnerability’s scope is limited to scenarios where an attacker already possesses local privileges without requiring prior access or network-based exploitation.
Recommended actions
Implement stricter privilege hygiene practices on affected systems to minimise the risk of initial access.
Monitor endpoint activity closely for signs of unauthorised or suspicious local interactions, such as unexpected file openings or page visits.
Maintain awareness of updates or patches for the affected library once available, although no patch currently exists.
Consider controls around device access and user permissions to prevent unauthorised local access that could enable exploitation of this flaw.
