A flaw was found in WildFly (CVE-2026-84823)

HIGH CVSS 7.1 path-traversal Published October 16, 2026

What happened

A vulnerability has been identified in WildFly, affecting several products including Red Hat Fuse 7, Red Hat JBoss Enterprise Application Platform 7 and 8, the JBoss Enterprise Application Platform Expansion Pack, and Red Hat Single Sign-On 7. This flaw, designated CVE-2026-84823, involves a path traversal vulnerability in the `take-snapshot` operation. A user with the lowest standard Role-Based Access Control (RBAC) role, specifically the `Monitor` role, can exploit this flaw by manipulating the `name` parameter during the operation. Through this exploitation, an attacker can write a copy of the server configuration to an arbitrary location. Consequently, this can lead to sensitive data such as credentials being exposed, as the server configuration is then readable back by the attacker. The vulnerability arises from the ability of an attacker, with low privileges and no user interaction, to remotely access an exposed service and perform the attack. The flaw facilitates privilege escalation and information disclosure without requiring collaboration from other users or actions. The severity is rated high, with a CVSS score of 7.1, due to the potential for significant information leaks and server configuration compromise. The weakness has been classified under CWE-22, indicating a path traversal flaw. At present, no specific patch or fix has been publicly disclosed, and analysis from the NVD is ongoing, meaning the scope and mitigation strategies may evolve as additional information becomes available. The attack condition is straightforward for an unauthenticated remote attacker if the service is exposed to the network, highlighting the importance of controlling network access to affected components.

Who is affected

Organisations running WildFly deployments that include affected products such as Red Hat Fuse 7, Red Hat JBoss Enterprise Application Platform 7 and 8, the JBoss Enterprise Application Platform Expansion Pack, or Red Hat Single Sign-On 7 are vulnerable. These deployments become susceptible if they include an exposed network service that can be accessed externally, allowing an attacker to initiate the exploit with low privileges and no user interaction. The impact remains geographically or topologically limited by network segmentation and access controls, but otherwise, all affected deployments are at potential risk.

Recommended actions

  1. Restrict network access to affected services to prevent unauthenticated remote access.
  2. Implement access controls and network segmentation to minimise exposure of the affected components.
  3. Monitor network traffic for unusual activity that could indicate exploitation attempts.
  4. Keep systems under close review for updates or advisories from the vendor regarding patches or mitigations.
